Watching a Rocket Launch Near Orlando: Where to Go, What to Expect

A rocket launching on a bright plume of exhaust

Rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral are about a 70-mile, roughly 75-minute drive east of Windsor Cay Resort, close enough to build a launch around a day trip. With launches happening frequently, there's a good chance one lines up with your stay.

How far is the Space Coast from Windsor Cay?

About 70 miles, or roughly an hour and 15 minutes, mostly along the SR-528 Beachline Expressway (a toll road).

Where to watch a launch

  • Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, the closest public viewing, with paid launch-viewing packages and exhibits to fill the day.
  • Playalinda Beach (Canaveral National Seashore), one of the closest free, open-sky views of the pads.
  • Jetty Park at Port Canaveral, a beach-and-pier park popular for launches.
  • Titusville along the Indian River (Space View Park and the Max Brewer Bridge area), a classic free vantage point looking across the water toward the pads.
  • Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral, watch from the sand and make a full beach day of it.

What to expect with crowds

High-profile launches, crewed missions and the biggest rockets, draw large crowds. Roads near the coast (SR-405 and the Beachline) get busy, parking fills early, and viewing areas can reach capacity hours ahead. Arrive early, bring water and sun protection, and have a backup spot in mind.

Make a day of it

Because the launch window can move, pair your trip with a beach day so the drive is worth it either way. A larger home like the Seashore gives the whole group room to regroup afterward, and you're back to your private pool the same evening.
